Worship God and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, God does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful. [The Holy Quran 4:36]
Regardless of Christianity's 600 year head-start on Islam, it seems on though it may become the world's largest religion by 2100, according to a new Pew Research study. The same study estimated that, while Christianity has around 500 million people more than Islam, Islam might catch up by 2050. [1]
If you're here, you've picked a good time to learn, regardless of whether you intend to become a Muslim or not.
Well, the definition of Islam is 'submission'. Not to any person or human, not to statues, not to 500 different gods, but to the one God. It means taking away the necessity of worldly desire to obtain personal contact with God, who we call 'The Most Merciful' and 'The Most Compassionate', often you'll hear Him called Allah, though, which just means 'God' in Arabic, the primary language of Islam.
We believe in Adam, Noah, David, Jesus, John, Moses, Abraham, etc. were all prophets of this one God and that they all preached the oneness and truth of God and never ascribed any false partners to him. We believe in angels; we believe in Muhammad as a prophet as well; we believe in the Day of Judgement; we believe that we have freedom of will, but that everything is predestined.
We believe it is obligatory for a person to pray five times a day, give money to the poor, fast for 30 days a year to show their devotion to God, and, if they can, go to Mecca, the home of the prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him).
These are all of the basics of Islam. Islam, generally, is a religion of thought. If something does not make sense, one is encouraged to ask, because we believe Islam to be a religion of thought, science, and philosophy. To summarize, Islam is humanity in its most civilized, natural state. Loving creatures, loving people, thinking, being healthy, etc.
